Woman on treadmillThe Importance of Stretching When Exercising

Many people overlook the importance of making sure they warm up and prepare properly for exercise – and a key part of getting ready and warmed up is stretching.  After all, without proper stretching and preparation, you could put yourself at risk of injury in both the short and long term.

Stretching is essential to help prevent injury during exercise – this is perhaps the most crucial reason for doing so.  Muscles and joints which are not warmed up or stretched correctly will lack fluidity and will therefore be more stubborn to move freely during sustained exercise.  Stretching will warm up your muscles and therefore prepare your body for movement. With the correct practice, good form and technique; you really will reap the benefits of proper stretching and correct preparation for exercise. You can never do enough to prepare your body for exercise, in fact, the more, the better!

Stretching also helps aid the body in avoiding muscle soreness by ensuring that blood and nutrients are delivered throughout your body evenly – and it’s also crucial to help maintain a healthy posture, as otherwise, you may risk putting yourself at risk of aches, pains and muscle restrictions that could lead to an extensive period of time and money putting straight.

For any advice you may need, if you are starting to exercise or are unsure whether or not you are using the right technique for your routine, Hertfordshire Chiropractic Clinic will be happy and willing to help you with a host of advice and guides on how you can prepare your body and make the most of a great workout that will benefit your body and form long term.

Just as important as warming up is cooling down – this is the process whereby your body will gradually re-adjust to returning to a relaxed state, allowing your heart rate to return to a resting rate and helping you to avoid any unnecessary dizziness – and to also help your body from storing up any potentially painful lactic acid.  The correct form and technique before and after exercise will not only help you get the best results, but will also help relax you and prepare you for taking on sustained movement.  After all, you’re not likely to be in it for the pain!
